E.C.A. Scope of Practice

E.C.A. Scope of Practice

Dear Member,

Concerns have been raised around the Job Description, person specification and scope of practice for the Emergency Care Assistant.

The recent operational update from the trust is correct around the Job description and Person specification, but UNISON is fully aware that the scope of practice is often the biggest influence in any job role and this hasn’t been finally agreed.

The job description and person specification has been “table top” evaluated at band 3 however because this is a new role within the trust it can/will be revaluated within 6 months to ensure the original outcome reflects the actual duties the members are undertaking, this 6 month review is a safety net embedded in the AFC system

In regards to the scope of practice UNISON is meeting with the trust this week to try and finalise the details, UNISON will only agree the scope of practice if it reflects band 3 pay and will inform the trust that any other duties forced onto members could well have an impact in the review, basically if they want ECA members to undertake the same duties as an Assistant practitioner they will have to pay band 4.

Current Assistant Practitioner members waiting to become Paramedics will be covered in another annex within the scope of practice, these Assistant Practitioners will need to keep their current level of clinical skills up and should be allowed to attend as within previous guidelines.
