UNISON has agreed that two ECAs can solely back up an RRV on scene for the following reasons:
RRV drivers are constantly waiting extended periods for back up
RRV drivers are being constantly being asked to work on DCA's with ECAs who have been planned shifts knowing there is no one to pair up with
Double qualified DCA crews are being split up to work with ECAs, yet again with no planned shifts or vacant lines
ECAs are having their overtime reduced.
This agreement has no clinical risk because the RRV clinician must ALWAYS travel in with the patient.
UNISON will monitor the situation especially around end of shift overtime for RRVs
Two ECAs can NOT be used to respond together to any other grade of call or transport patients without a qualified member of staff present, UNISON insists that is band 4 work
The Trust had also agreed to sit down with UNISON over the next couple of weeks and review the ECA
role.
