End of Shift Overtime

End of Shift Overtime

UNISON was led to believe that the new ARP system combined with the introduction of new rotas would help reduce end of shift overtime. However this does not appear to have been the case, so UNISON is now meeting the Trust in order to negotiate a better, more structured process.

End of shift overtime has been a major issue for many years within the ambulance trust. It impinges on member’s time and extends what is already a long shift. This also costs the Trust a great amount of money, impacts on handover of vehicles and in many cases impacts on the following shifts.

UNISON is planning on putting forward ideas to the Trust that are straightforward, robust and will serve to benefit both members and the service. This issue was highlighted at the recent JSG by UNISON, and there appears to be an appetite from the Trust to negotiate a solution to the issue.

Any solution will never completely eradicate end of shift overtime, however for years the lack of action around the subject has allowed the situation to grow and get out of control, two and three hours overtime should be the exception not the norm.
